National Championship Prediction

I preface this by saying ,  I really really hope Florida wins.  I’m an SEC guy all the way.  However,  I have a bad feeling about this one.

My Score:  OK 31 – FL 24

I hope the Gators prove me wrong,  I really do.

College Football Playoff

I’m going to say my peace on this and be done with it.  I refuse to let the topic of a College Football playoff rule me.  So here’s my thoughts:

I hear Utah’s AG is threatening to file a lawsuit against the NCAA for being descriminitory.  I’m not a “settle it in the courts”  type person,  but I honestly think they have a good case.  That being said  I know a lot of the talk is for a 4 or maybe 8 team playoff.  I think we’ll probably see one of the two in the next few years.  My only problem is I still don’t think it’s the complete solution.  I think to close the book on it,  you would need a 16 team playoff system.  Don’t get me wrong  8 teams is a million times better than what we have now,  however with the emergence of some of the weaker conferences,  I think they would lean toward a system of each conference champ getting an automatic bid.  This sounds great,  but I think it could push some teams out of the top 8 that could possibly make a run at it.   Year after year in the SEC we’ll have a very good team with one loss that doesn’t even get to play in the SEC championship game.  The reason is because their one loss would come from someone in their side of the SEC.  A prime example was last year,  when Georgia got left out of the SEC championship because their loss was to TN  who was in that side also.  TN also had one loss at the end,  but won the head to head tie break over GA.

Yes,  I know GA ended up 3 or 4 in the BCS standings.  However,  if they wouldn’t have looked extremely impressive in their last few games,  they still could have won those games and ended up 6 or 7 in the BCS.  The problem then is that if you give auto bids to conference champs that would generally be ranked lower,  you’ve inadvertently bumped a one loss SEC team out of the top 8 down to probably 10th or 12th etc…

Granted the 8 team playoff would go a long way toward determining the true champion, but I honestly think that scenarios like I’ve mentioned above would be much more common than you think.  We have another example this year with TX in the Big 12.  It’s easy to say that they would automatically get a spot,  but just say they ended number 5 or 6 because they didn’t run the score up like they did in their last few games.  Then make room for all the lower conference champs and there you have it.  It’s possible Alabama could have been left out in this year also in an 8 team playoff.  I think the playoff is not just the solution to crowning a champion,  but should also be the solution for the 50 point blowouts, for style points.

One more great example I just thought of from this year.  If Oregon St.  wouldn’t have choked against Oregon,  and would have  won the Pac 10;  then you’d be looking at an 8 team playoff this year without  USC.  Again,  8 teams is great but it’s not the final solution.

Ok ,  glad I got that out.
