Twitter: Friend or Foe

February 18, 2009

I’ve been using twitter for some time now and I have to be perfectly honest.  I’m not sure if it’s my best friend or worst enemy.  There are times when I love the ability to send messages quickly with people I follow,  but I’m not sure there aren’t already several more effective ways to do that.  I guess what I’m saying is I can see the beauty in twitter,  but it’s as though my view is distorted.  I need some valid reasons to continue my use of Twitter.  I understand it’s a networking tool;  but not to the extent facebook is.  Some of you probably won’t like that statement,  but facebook allows me to connect with the “real”  people in my life as well as other people in ministry.   It seems like twitter just doesn’t do both for me at this point.  Maybe it has more to do with my circle of people than me.  At times it has been nothing more than a fancy way to update my facebook status.  What I’m asking is,  what does it provide that no other tool does.  Why should I twitter?  Go…

Top 8 in 08

January 3, 2009

Here are my top 8 post from 2008.  As normal the iPhone made a big splash.   Numbers  2, 3, and 4 were pretty interesting to me.  To think;  all those people looking for swimming lessons ended up on my blog somehow. :)   enjoy

We’re on the Map

December 10, 2008

Google recently made a significant upgrade to their “Street View”  availability on Google Maps.  It now includes the Birmingham metro area.  Once you get north of Birmingham,  only the interstate and a few major highways are visible,  but guess what?  We made the map!  Woo Hoo.  Apparently the image capturing vehicle drove right by our church and I can even see my car sitting next to the building (well it’s a silver car anyway,  it may be Brandon’s old car).  If you attend Skyline,  you should check it out when you have a chance.  My driveway at home also made it :)

VideoTeaching.com

November 20, 2008

It seems like every other week I’m writing about some new tool and/or website that Lifechurch.tv has released.  Today I learned about their latest project videoteaching.com .   In their words:

“We’re developing VideoTeaching.com to distribute free teaching from top Christian communicators. Churches around the world will be able to download high quality video sermons from a library of teaching messages. We’re assembling the team of teachers who’ll be contributing content to the site and expect to announce them early this December.”

The whole idea of Resourcing Churches is really close to my heart.  Hence, I’m pumped about this release.  I’ve wrote several times about churches using various video teachings in order to bring the most effective communicators to their people.   Regardless where you stand on video teaching; I think this new tool should at worst be a great small group resource for your church.  Thoughts?

Ocarina App

November 19, 2008

So last night, Courtney Nix IM’s me to tell me about this Ocarina app on the iPhone.  I had seen it once or twice in the App Store, but hadn’t heard much about it, so I passed.  The last few days,  I’ve seen several references to it on different blogs and Youtube videos.  Courtney said he thought it was “the best app yet”,  so I had to download it.  I think he’s probably right,  at least in the category of “Toys”.  Not only is the app super slick ,  but they have a huge library of sheet music to play.  We talked about possibly incorporating an “iPhone Band” into our Christmas Ball this year somehow.  That should be worth coming for,  by itself.  Anyway, if your not familar with the instrument,  here is a video demonstrating the app.  Enjoy

Hope I spelled that title right.  Check out this clip of Driscoll.  I love the quote;  ”it’s a Timeless Truth with a Timely Method”.  Not sure about DJ Jazzy Jesus. :)

oovoo

November 11, 2008

So I’ve been wanting to try out this service called oovoo.  I’m not sure where they got the name or what it means.  I can tell you what it is.  It’s basically an ichat like service that will also make phone calls.  So last night Courtney, Lee, and myself downloaded the app to give it a once over.  I was impressed with the video quality (slightly better than ichat, especially on a 3 way chat), however the audio quality was quiet poor from my perspective.  Lee and I went back and forth between oovoo and ichat so I could do a fair comparison.  I think the benefit of oovoo would be the ability to have 6 people at once.  I think the max in ichat is 4.  This is probably the best option I’ve seen for anyone on a PC.  It’s probably a give and take with ichat at this point,  but I tend to prefer Apple’s interface.  That’s my review, take it or leave it.
